The One Real Miracle – Deconstructing Yourself

The One Real Miracle - Deconstructing Yourself

Guided nondual meditation by Michael Taft at the San Francisco Dharma Collective.
Meditation starts almost at the beginning, and lasts for one hour.
Then a dharma talk followed by Q&A.

The “one real miracle” referred to here is the miracle of awareness itself. There is currently no explanation for awareness, how it arises, or what it is. In that sense, it’s a miracle. But it’s also miraculous in the sense of its fundamental totality and centrality to our experience, and to everything.

We can look at awareness with awareness, and see that it is not composed of any particular content. By relaxing the core of the mind, and not constricting around any content, the mind opens up into its natural state of freedom, clarity, and freshness. In this guided meditation, Michael teaches the “drop the ball” technique of relaxing away from attention on any particular content.

Then in the dharma talk, he relates this to the ancient technique found in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (“Great Forest Text”), which is one of the oldest Upanishads (c. 10th–5th century, BCE), called “neti neti.” Neti neti, which means “not this, not that” is a way of training the mind to let go of content and return to awareness.
