Your boss left a pile of files there, the phone rings all the time, and your work colleagues are annoying because they constantly need your help. You would like to freak out at any moment.
Often it is such stressful situations that ensure that our inner balance is over quickly. If someone comes along in a conversation or discussion with arguments that do not correspond to your own views, the calm can quickly be over.
How to keep calm at work
Stressful situations occur again and again, especially in the workplace. The reasons for this can be varied. Often it is due to too much work that we have undertaken or that our boss has placed on us.
However, we may also be dissatisfied with our work or our employer. If this has been the case for a long time, you should think about a new path in life.
In most cases, however, they are temporary stressors that don’t burden us every day. To prevent these from bringing you to the brink of burnout or angry outburst, you can try the following to bring calm back into your day.
Tips for staying calm at work
- Keep calm and take a deep breath. Close your eyes and breathe deeply in and out. Concentrate solely on your breathing so that your head becomes free again.
- Pretend to be deaf. If you can, put some soothing music on your ears or use some ear plugs to shield yourself from any acoustic distraction. Believe me, it works wonders.
- Minimize the flood of information. Make sure you don’t get distracted by your email program or your private smartphone. Usually it is sufficient if you check it every 1-2 hours. If possible, put the phone on mute and let callers
- Recharge your batteries. Go for a few minutes in the fresh air or take a short nap. You will see that the world will look completely different afterwards.
- Create a plan. Make a note of your tasks and put them in a priority list according to their importance. Then enter them in your daily or weekly schedule. So you know exactly what to do and when and stay in control.
- Activate your reward center. For the completion of small sub-steps, expect a small reward, e.g. a short coffee break or something sweet.
- Try to smile. Make sure you always have a smile on your face. You subconsciously create a better mood and you will find your work a lot easier.
- Balance yourself out. Try to reduce any pent-up aggression sensibly instead of on the job. Go running after work, chop wood or do a proper workout in the gym.
How to keep calm in discussions
Surely you also know people who like to discuss for their life or who always have to be right. Before you get upset about it or let yourself be drawn into a verbal argument, here are a few helpful tips:
- Don’t take it personally. Nobody is against you, the others are just for themselves, as are you by the way. So leave the other person’s opinion and don’t take it as an attack on you.
- First think. It is not for nothing in the military that there is a rule that a complaint cannot be submitted until the following day. You should first “sleep on it for a night”. Do it the same way. Before you react and defy the other properly, treat yourself to a break or sleep for a night. In most cases, the topic has already become unimportant to you.
- Agree with the people. An effective method, with which many discussants and know-it-alls do not get along, is if you uncompromisingly agree that they are right. So let them talk about whatever and then just say – with a slight undertone, if you like – “You’re right”.
- Stay matter-of-fact and relaxed. Don’t get into an argument. Stay relaxed and calm, let any hostility and attacks roll off you and let your counterpart let off steam. At some point he will lose his interest when he races in front of him and you listen to him with a friendly grin on your lips.
- Step on the brakes. If all else fails, end the conversation by telling your interlocutor that you will not continue the conservation at this level.
Always keep in mind: getting excited doesn’t actually bring you anything. It will not change the situation and you will usually not feel better afterwards. So invariably deal with eliminating the causes of your stress instead of clinging to the symptoms.
If our body is confronted with situations that it was previously unfamiliar with or if there are too many of them at once, we react with stress and we can easily become angry.
